Follow the steps below to backup your iphone, ipad and ipod.

1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes on your computer if you don’t already have it. The article has been written for Windows version of iTunes 11 and you might notice some differences with version and platform change. The changes will be very minimal though.

2. Plug in your iOS device to the computer using the data cable. If you have not disabled auto-sync in iTunes , it will launch automatically. Wait for iTunes to detect your device and if you have not setup and initial sync , I would recommend you do that first.

3. Having done that, click on your device button on the top-right corner of iTunes app. It will open up the device management page. Here under the Backups section select what kind of backup you would like to make. The iCloud backup backs up the most important data to your iCloud account. You can also store your backup on your computer and encrypt it. To encrypt a backup check the option Encrypt local backup and provide the encryption password.

4. When you are done with the setup, click on the backup button to start the backup process.

iTunes will take the backup of only the important stuffs and will not backup the apps that are installed on your device. The application data along with all the in-app purchases will be backed up in the process. For the application, you can either sync it to iTunes along with all the music and videos, or you can restore them from the App Store purchased section after configuring your device. All the other data can be restored by connecting the device to the computer and clicking the restore button on the process.
